Abstract

Modern furniture design offers a special possibility to maintain cultural heritage through the integration of traditional Chinese ornamentation which satisfies present-day aesthetic and functional requirements. The decorative elements including cloud and thunder patterns and dragon and phoenix motifs together with floral motifs retain their cultural worth and artistic values. Modern applications of ancient Chinese ornamentation into contemporary furniture necessitate proper modifications to fulfill minimalist and sustainable goals while embracing modular design principles. This research utilizes multiple methods which include analyzing cases and designing products and conducting user feedback studies. Research into traditional motif applications in design was done through studies of prominent brands and designers Banmu and Frank Chou Design Studio. The design practice requires prototype development which investigates the implementation of engraving methods and inlay techniques and digital rendering approaches. Users participate in research surveys and interviews to rate the design aspects and utility of developed prototypes along with their visuals. The study demonstrates that modern furniture can accept traditional Chinese ornamental elements by implementing laser engraving as well as employing modular design and smart technology systems. The research illustrates three essential methods of integrating traditional elements into modern furniture: (1) it shows how traditional motifs become abstract or simplified for minimalist appearance and (2) it demonstrates sustainable material usage for cultural preservation while (3) showing ways to make furniture interact with users. The research developed an approach which designers can use for building innovative furniture that connects traditional values with contemporary design.
